This is an AMAZING article on picking sewing patterns (templates for those of us who aren't tailors) and HOW you can find the BEST remedies for making sure you don't buy one that will not work.

It's easy to look at a cute pattern picture and instantly visualize the outfit on yourself, but before you plunk down the coin for fabric, take some time to make sure that garment design will look as good on you as you hope.
* The illustrated pattern: Take a page from fashion designers and use a croqui, or sketched figure, to determine if a style is the correct look for you. Download this standard croqui figure and adjust to your proportions. Then transfer your customized croqui to tracing paper and trace the pattern garment onto your sketched figure.
* Silhouette matters: Understanding your silhouette will also bring you closer to choosing what looks will work on you and what doesn't. Of course, the basics apply, such as what looks good on a tall figure vs. a petite one; a large bust vs. a small bust, and so forth.
* Wardrobe check: All too often, it's easy to get inspired by a pretty look and forget completely whether it works with what is in your closet. Before you go to the trouble of stitching something up, take some time to go through your clothes and make sure that it will be a working garment in your wardrobe.
* Not just for sewing: The best part about learning these basics is that you can take it shopping with you, too. Once you understand what looks work best on your proportions and in your closet, you can apply the same principles to your store bought clothes as well.
