#PATTIESSON
Pass the Kleenex to your teen daughter, Justin Bieber may not be the hottest thing on Twitter for much longer.
Twitter has confirmed that the algorithm used for their Trending Topics feature has been changed to reflect what is "most breaking" and "immediately popular".
The feature previously focused on more consistently popular topics, thus spreading "Bieber Fever" to every corner of Twitter and often elbowing out more trend worthy topics.
“The new algorithm identifies topics that are immediately popular, rather than topics that have been popular for a while or on a daily basis, to help people discover the ‘most breaking’ breaking news from across the world. We think that trending topics which capture the hottest emerging trends and topics of discussion on Twitter are the most interesting." Twitter representatives explained.
The decision to make this change comes as somewhat of a slap in the face to Bieber himself who expressed his discontent via Facebook today.
"Wow...Twitter I thought we had a good thing going. Cant help it that I have the greatest fans in the world." he posted.
The reality of the decision caused Justin Bieber to drop off the trending list, but legions of Bieberettes took to the site in droves and began trending "#pattiesson" into the top of the list for a better portion of the last few days - pattie being used as a code word for Bieber's mother's first name.
The change brought about by Twitter has polarized the online community. Those loyal to Justin Bieber see this as a direct attack against the pop singer, whereas others see this as a balancing tweak that will allow room for more equal access into the top trending list.
And what does Justin Bieber have to say to the developers of Twitter directly?
"@twitter I heard you changed your system to stop my fans from making trending topics?? Really?? Where is the love??"
Is there a bright side of this whole issue? Well, at least his fans are focused on something more important other than threatening Kim Kardashian with death.
Oh to be a teenager again.
