2008 Thelma & Louise? The number of crimes committed by girls has risen by a 25% in three years, according to figures from the Youth Justice Board.
Their Annual Workload Data report shows that girls committed 59,236 crimes in 2006/07, up by a quarter from 47,358 in 2003/04.
This compares to a two per cent drop in crimes committed by boys over the same period, although young men still commit the majority of crimes.
The board said it had commissioned more research into why crimes committed by girls had increased.
The most common crimes committed by girls were of theft, violent attacks, criminal damage and "public order".
Around 16,000 girls were found guilty of violent attacks and nearly 20,000 of theft and handling stolen goods.
Nearly 1,000 girls were convicted of drug crimes, nearly 1,500 of motoring offences and 5,964 of public order crimes.
The authors found girls made up less than 10% of those locked up for youth crimes despite being responsible for around 20% of the crimes committed.
The report showed crimes were committed by children as young as 10 but the bulk were carried out by boys in their late teens.
About 40% of youngsters who committed one crime went on to commit another, the report found.
Those who were given custodial sentences - often for the most serious crimes - were more likely to reoffend.
About 65% of those sent to young offender institutions committed further crimes and about three quarters of those dealt with outside court stayed crime free, the report found.
What do you guys think of these NEW facts?
