What is going on in the world today...?
(CBS) DOVER, Del. Two students were shot and wounded, one seriously, at Delaware State University early Friday, and the campus was locked down as police searched for a gunman, officials said.
Delaware State University police say two students have been identified as persons of interest in a campus shooting and police are interviewing one of them.
University spokesperson Carlos Holmes said all classes have been cancelled and non-essential personnel have been told not report to work after a shooting on the Dover campus just before 1 a.m. EDT
Officials said two students, a male and a female, were transported to an area hospital after the shooting. The male is said to be in stable condition, while Holmes said the female is in serious condition with injuries that could be potentially life-threatening.
The woman was taken to Christiana Care hospital in Wilmington with a traumatic wound to the abdomen, said John Wilson, the deputy chief of Kent County Emergency Services. The man was taken to Kent General Hospital in Dover. Officials at both hospitals referred questions to the university.
Holmes said residents on campus have been asked to remain in their dorms as the suspect in the shooting remains at large.
"We do not know where the shooter’s at," said Holmes. “We hope he’s left campus, but we cannot say that with any surety."
Holmes said investigators have been reviewing footage from surveillance cameras on campus.
He added police are expected to interview the victims in hopes of identifying the shooter.
Students living in on-campus and in nearby off-campus housing were notified of the shootings by letters posted in their residences, the university's web site and a telephone information line.
Holmes said school officials learned from tragedy at Virginia Tech which left 33 dead.
"I don’t think there is an institution in American that did not learn from Virginia Tech, so certainly that was on our minds today," Holmes said.
The motive for the shooting is unknown. Holmes said students held a peaceful rally Thursday night supporting six students arrested in Jena, Louisiana, but he does not believe the rally is connected to the shootings.

Six suspects are in custody on charges of first-degree murder for the shootings.
